چکیده

Validation of Chemical and Non-Chemical Antimicrobial Interventions Applied Preand Post-Chilling to Reduce Microbial Populations in Broiler Carcasses. (August 2007) Veronica Alejandra Molina, B.Sc., Zamorano Panamerican Agricultural University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Marcos X. Sánchez-Plata Higher risks of food-borne illness associated with increased consumption of poultry products make it necessary to identify potential sources of contamination and apply intervention strategies that will prevent or minimize the risk of contamination during processing. This study investigated the effects of chemical and natural decontamination treatments including sprayed application of acidified calcium sulfate (ACS) in combination with -polylysine (EPL), dry-rubbing kosher salt coating and molten paraffin wax dipping application on microbial populations of broiler carcasses and parts. Treatments were evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing the numbers of artificially inoculated rifampicin resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strain NVSL 951776 on the skin surface of bone-in chicken breasts. General model procedures were used to find statistical differences (P<0.05) and separation of means was done with least square means using SAS 9.1. Chemical interventions (ACS + EPL) caused an overall reduction of ~0.65 CFU/ml of rifampicin resistant Salmonella Typhimurium populations in inoculated chicken breasts. Similar reductions were observed in validation experiments in whole carcasses when compared to post-eviscerated control samples as well as post chilled

Effects of a Theory-Based Educational Intervention on Skills of Emergency Medical Service Personnel for Scene Management in Chemical Accidents

Background:  Scene management in accidents reduces losses, speeds treatment, and facilitates immediate victim transfer. Learning the related skills through theory-based educational intervention makes this task possible. This study aimed to determine the effect of theory-based educational intervention on emergency medical personnel skills to manage the scene in chemical accidents. Materials and...

THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Biological Pre-filtration and Surface Water Treatment Microbial barrier function and removal of natural inorganic and organic compounds

Waterworks in Sweden that apply conventional chemical surface water treatment are facing a number of challenges, including changes in raw water quality and demands for improved particle removal. The chief objective of this work was to evaluate biological pre-filtration for typical Swedish surface water, regarding the removal of natural organic matter, particles, iron and manganese, and taste an...

Ziziphus mauritiana mediated synthesis of copper and nickel nanoparticles for comparative efficacy in biological water purification

The burden of life on the earth is the source of biological contamination in water. Nanotechnology has promising contributions in control of microbial contaminations and medicinal plants further increase these properties. Presently, copper acetate and nickel oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using 1mM solution of each with Ziziphus mauritiana leaves extract as reducing agent. Nanoparticles w...

Physiological and Biochemical Mechanisms of Seed Priming-Induced Chilling Tolerance in Rice Cultivars

Rice belongs to tropical and subtropical environments and is extremely sensitive to chilling stress particularly during emergence and early stages of seedling development. Seed priming can be a good approach to enhance rice germination and stand establishment under chilling stress. The present study examined the role of different seed priming techniques viz., hydropriming, osmopriming, redox pr...
